Sudanese army accuses paramilitary forces of destroying part of key bridge in Khartoum
The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on Monday accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of destroying part of a main bridge in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
“In continuation of its systematic targeting of the country’s infrastructure and capabilities, the RSF militia on Sunday evening destroyed the eastern part of the Al-Halfaya Bridge,” the SAF said in a statement.
The Al-Halfaya Bridge is one of the ten bridges linking the three main cities in the capital metropolitan area, namely Khartoum, Bahri, and Omdurman. It is also the largest on the Nile, stretching 911 meters long and 27 meters wide.
The bridge connects Bahri city, now mostly controlled by the RSF, to the Karari locality, north of Omdurman, controlled by the SAF.
The RSF has not yet commented on the accusation.
Sudan has been embroiled in a deadly conflict between the SAF and the RSF since mid-April 2023, which has claimed more than 16,650 lives, according to the Sudan situation report updated by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on June 24.
