DRC: Territorial boundary changes, especially in the Oriental

By on May 20, 2010
The question of boundary changes in the DRC arouses a deep debate in the country. The senators of the Ecuador province ask for an immediate application of the new division planned by the constitution of the RDC, that is the creation of five new provincial entities.

In the oriental Province, a group of provincial members of parliament has already announced that five districts will be brought up at the level of provinces. All these shares lean on a constitutional arrangement which planned the creation of 26 new provinces on May 14th of this year. But as nothing was done by the central government for lack of financial means, these new provinces will have only a virtual existence. A debate was opened at the National Assembly to amend this clause of the Constitution and establish a new chronogram for the creation of the new provinces. There are very vast provinces, in particular the Oriental province, which has, about, the same surface as France, thus, it is necessary to cut it in several provinces which will have easily administrable dimensions.
