Rwanda: Opponents in turmoil

In Rwanda, the presidential election is on August the 9th, and assumptions are giving already the current President Paul Kagamé a score of at least 95% of the votes, transcending though the 2003 results, centred around 90%.

This is even more likely to happen, because all persons who could have an impact on the national political scene, and able to do some opposition to the strong man of Kigali, were excluded from the presidential race. While dismissing those who might still interfere, General Kagamé has, at the same time, selected candidates of convenience, avoiding running alone for the presidential, and putting the international community in an embarrassing situation. Yet with the approach of this presidential, Rwanda is shaken by assassinations, arrests and disappearances of politicians and journalists, putting the power in a bad corner. But power in Rwanda is Paul Kagamé, to whom the accusing finger is turned for all to the murders and the subsequent arrests, although in such circumstances, the evidence is difficult to establish. But for the « Reporters without frontiers » there is no doubt about the sponsor of the killings. That is why the organisation has urged the European Union and other international donors to suspend their support for the Rwandan authorities that never ceased to terrorise their opponents…
