Guinea: Call a new election at the head of INEC

By on October 13, 2010
Members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued a petition requesting the election of a new president to head the institution in charge of organising the elections in replacement of Camara Louncény, elected on September 21, but boycotted by several commissioners.

The call of the INEC members comes less than two weeks before the second round of the presidential elections to be held October 24. The petition, signed by dozens of national commissioners, was read by the INEC Head of oommunication and information, Thierno Saidou Bayo. “We strongly condemn the disgraceful actions from some of our colleagues that had tarnished the image of our institution by undermining its main asset, its neutrality in the eyes of the national and the international opinion”, he argued. He stressed that electing a new president is needed to solve the problem of INEC. We want to save the independence and the integrity of the INEC through a free choice of a president who is acceptable to the majority and willing to bring a political  appeasement within the country”, he added. The election of Louncény Camara has created a split within the INEC members, but also disputed by the candidate’s camp of Cellou Dalein Diallo, who is accusing Loucény of supporting his rival, Alpha Condé. The former interim president, Mame Hadja Camara and the Vice-President Amadou Oury are also disqualified by Cellou Dalein Diallo’s camp. That adds more pressure to the dormant volcano…
