Sahel: the support of counterterrorism experts from the G8

By on October 15, 2010

Experts in Counterterrorism from the G8 countries and sub-Sahara region have met in Bamako. The Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Moctar Wane, said that to hold the meeting in Bamako is a way to “show that there are terrorist challenges” in the region, whereas the objective is to strengthen and coordinate war against terrorism in the Sahel region that stretches from Mauritania to Sudan.

The political scientist and lecturer at the University of Bamako, Professor Amadou Keita, declared also that: “We can say we are at the crossroads”. He recalled that Mali had sounded the alarm, long ago, against the Islamist drift, which has affected the entire northern Mali and the Sahel-Sahara band. Mr. Keita said that many places in this region are not controlled by central governments. He added, if the States had put their military on time, they could achieve greater results in the fight against crime. Unfortunately, when the winds are blowing in a direction not desired by the “caravan of peace”, then we must stop, resume his breath, listen to the wises and experts; then back on the road while correcting its route that may seem long but safe and reassuring if only all the camel-drivers could bring their stone to the edifice. Nobody can face the storm alone, and the wise knows it very well.
