Libya/Switzerland: New offense against the Libyan leader
A new diplomatic clash is building up again between Switzerland and Libya. A senior Libyan official has openly denounced a poster released by the Geneva citizens Movement (GCM), which showed the Libyan leader,
Muammar Gaddafi with the following comment: He wants to destroy Switzerland. This poster was quickly banned from being broadcasted in Geneva, but have been sent by post to residents. However, Tripoli will not tolerate this insult to its charismatic leader, who has instructed his chief of protocol, Nouri Mesmar, to initiate legal proceedings against Switzerland. Mr. Nouri Mesmar is seeking though to appoint a team of lawyers to take the case to the court, invoking contempt to the Leader Muammar Kaddafi, and charge the MCG and the Geneva canton of compensation. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is now seeking to limit the damage, stating and informing the Geneva authorities on the possibility of the Libyan authorities to seize the Geneva justice. The Swiss authorities work quickly and at all levels – Geneva State Council, the Federal Council, Justice – to bring down this building up pressure, mainly that the relations between Bern and Tripoli were deeply strained after the July 2008 arrest of a son of the Leader Kadhafi, Hannibal, in Geneva.
