Central African Republic president offers “power share” to rebels
The Central African Republic’s embattled President, Francois Bozize, says he’s ready to share power with the leaders of a rebellion that’s threatening to unseat him. He made the announcement after meeting with visiting African Union Chairman Thomas Yayi Boni in Bangui. Francois Bozize adds that he is ready for peace talks being organized by regional leaders in Gabon, without conditions.
Bozize said, “I’m ready to go to Libreville without condition and without delay to meet with my African brothers. I am ready to engage them in a political dialogue.”
The Seleka rebel alliance has been sweeping across the Central African Republic for the past three weeks, highlighting the growing instability in the former French colony. But it’s unclear if Bozize’s offer will defuse the crisis.
A spokesman for the rebels says the group will consider the offer, but adds its aim is not to JOIN the existing government.
Neighboring countries on Saturday vowed to send extra peacekeepers into the country, to try to prevent further instability. Bozize has been president of the Central African Republic for nearly 10 years.
