President Mohamed Morsi on his first visit to Sudan
Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi is due in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, to meet with Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir and other high-ranking officials.
Morsi will arrive in Khartoum on Thursday for a two-day visit, which the Sudanese government said was ‘historic.’
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Thursday called on Egypt to play a bigger role to iron out the differences between Sudan and South Sudan.
“We look forward to regaining Egypt’s leading role on the regional and international stages, and we call on them to play a bigger role in the relations between Sudan and South Sudan,” al- Bashir said when meeting his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Morsi, who arrived in Khartoum earlier in the day in his first visit to Sudan since taking office.
For his part, Morsi said Egypt will back the efforts by Sudan and South Sudan to resolve the contentious issues between them so as to achieve peace and stability, vowing to provide all possible support to strengthen the dialogue between Khartoum and Juba.
“Egypt will support efforts for peace and stability in the Darfur region and would provide all possible help for the success of the upcoming donors’ conference in Doha for the development of Darfur,” Morsi said.
