Morocco has dismantled a “terrorist” cell whose members had ties with leaders of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and plotted attacks, the interior ministry said on Friday.

Four suspects were arrested when authorities “dismantled a terrorist cell,” it said in a statement.

The suspects had forged “ties to coordinate with some leaders” of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and were active in the central cities of Fes, Meknes, Taounate and Tiznit.

According to the interior ministry, the cell, dismantled after investigations led by the General directorate of territory surveillance (DGST), is led by militants who are notorious on extremist sites. They have succeeded in weaving links with some leaders of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and were commissioned to hire new recruits.

The ring leader, who was successful in recruiting some extremist-Jihadist Moroccans, including some linked to fighters of Al Qaeda in Syria, encouraged others to carry out sabotage operations against state institutions and was planning to conduct a precise terrorist operation, in accordance with AQIM agenda, says the source.

After completion of the investigation conducted under the supervision of the General attorney, the suspects will be brought to justice.
