Amr Moussa elected president of Egypt’s constitution drafting panel
Former presidential candidate Amr Moussa was elected on Sunday as the chairman of a 50-member committee tasked with writing the final draft of Egypt’s constitution, according to state TV.
Earlier in the day, the panel began its first meeting, which was procedural, in Cairo, to elect a chairman and two deputies and form sub committees.
The meeting was headed by its oldest member, Abdel Gelil Moustafa, head of the National Association for Change.
Amr Mousa, also the former Arab League chief, and Sameh Ashour, the chairman of the Bar Association, ran for the post of president of the committee. Mousa got 30 votes while Ashour got 16.
Following the overthrow of president Mohamed Morsi, a 10-member committee of judges and law professors was formed to propose amendments to the constitution.
The second committee of 50 public figures will have 60 days to review the amendments that were offered by the first one. Then the final draft will be put for a national referendum.
