Zambia’s President Michael Sata passed away

By on October 30, 2014

Zambia’s President Michael Sata died on Tuesday at a hospital in London. He was 77.

The country’s vice president, Guy Scott, was appointed on Wednesday as acting president until an election is held within 90 days.

The exact cause of Sata’s death is unknown.

Sata was elected president in 2011, after unsuccessfully seeking the office 3 times.

Speculation that Sata was having health problems began after he missed a scheduled speech at the UN General Assembly in September despite visiting New York. He also was absent from a ceremony to mark Zambia’s 50th anniversary of independence from Britain last week.

Scott’s interim appointment is likely to command attention. He is the first white president of a sub-Saharan nation since Frederik Willem de Klerk, who ended apartheid in South Africa in 1991.

Zambia has enjoyed robust economic growth, thanks to its rich mineral resources, including copper and cobalt.

But a majority of its people still live in poverty, resulting in a widening disparity of wealth.
