Madrid paid tribute to Morocco’s Unilateral Withdrawal from Guerguerate Region
The Spanish government paid tribute the official announcement, made by Morocco on Sunday, of an immediate unilateral withdrawal from the Guerguerate region.
In a statement by the Spanish Foreign Ministry, Madrid called on the other parties to “immediately” withdraw from the said region, in response to the request of the UN Secretary-General.
The Spanish government expressed its support for the UN Secretary-General’s appeal, on Saturday, to the parties “to show the utmost restraint to avoid escalation, so as to allow the resumption of dialogue as part of the political process led by the UN,” the statement said.
“The Spanish government hopes that contacts will soon resume on the initiative of the UN Secretary-General to move towards a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution” to the Sahara issue, the same source added.
Morocco was quick to react to the statement issued on Saturday evening by the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and withdraw its security forces from the region.
The UN chief had expressed concern about the situation in the Guerguerate had called on both parties, Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario, to show maximum restraint and avoid taking any measures that could further escalate tension in the region.
The UN chief urged “the parties to unconditionally withdraw all armed elements from the Buffer Strip as soon as possible, to create an environment conducive to a resumption of the dialogue in the context of the political process led by the United Nations.”
While Morocco immediately withdrew its security forces, the Polisario has decided to keep its armed elements in the region in defiance of the cease-fire agreement signed in 1991 and of the call made by the UN Secretary General.
