Nigeria: Russia’s Rosatom to build power plant
Abuja and Moscow have agreed to let Russian state-run company Rosatom to build and run Nigeria’s first nuclear plant to help relatively meet country’s local demand for energy, reports say.
The agreement signed between representatives of the Russian company and the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission makes Rosatom builder and operator of the plant, Bloomberg reports.
According an emailed statement seen by the US media, the Russian company will carry out feasibility studies and build a research center, all encompassing the site screening, capacity, financing and time frames of the project.
The agreement is based on previous accords signed between the two nations in 2009 for the development of nuclear program in the oil rich African country for peaceful purpose.
Nigeria in 2015 engaged in talks with Rosatom for the construction of four nuclear plants, for the cost of $20 billion.
Energy demand in the most populated African country surpasses current output of 4,500 megawatts.
