Tanzania: Police seize opposition figure’s mobile phone in raid on party’s headquarters
The Tanzanian police in capital Dares Salam confiscated Tuesday the mobile phone of opposition figure Zitto Kabwe of the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT)-Wazalendo for investigations after descending upon the party’s headquarters.
Kabwe reported to police at Kamata in the capital and informed the press of the incident.
The raid according to press was conducted as part of investigations into allegations of sedition that Kabwe is accused of.
The opposition leader was arrested late October for the speech on “the quality of life of Tanzanians, the state of economy and how to defeat the ruling party”, October 29.
The regime of President John Magufuli deemed the speech “inflammatory”, seeking to topple the government.
Magufuli’s regime is accused of power hijacking and crackdown on freedom of press and human rights. Several media outlets have been shut down since he came to power in 2015.
Lazaro Nyalandu, a lawmaker of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi in October announced his departure from the party in a move to the join the opposition, Chama Cha Demokrasia Na Maendeleo over what he called “deterioration of the political situation.”
He accused the President of confiscating executive, legislative and judiciary powers.
