President Emmanuel Macron himself announced Tuesday will pay his first visit to Algeria as President early next month after visiting the North African country during the presidential campaign.
Macron in May while running for the French top job visited Algiers declaring that ‘the French colonization was crime against humanity’.
“I have always condemned the colonization as a barbaric act. Barbarity is part of a past that we must face up by giving our apologies to people who suffered from our actions,” he said in interview with Echourouk News during his trip.
Though the statement earned him critics in France, the French leader stood out as a key partner in the eye of the Algerian regime which has long waited for condemnations of the French dominion from 1830 to 1962.
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika lauded the Macron’s ‘bold’ move. For him, Macron’s statements are a demonstration of his clear determination to work with Algiers.
