Zimbabwe: Sacked Vice President will be inaugurated on Friday
Emmerson Mnangagwa will be inaugurated as country’s President on Friday according state broadcaster ZBC after being sacked two weeks ago by former President Robert Mugabe.
Mnangagwa is coming from behind after being sidelined in succession of the former 93-year old leader.
Aged 73, Mangagwa fled to South Africa fearing for his life after former First lady Grace Mugabe and her party faction G-40 coerced Mugabe into axing him following alleged plot to topple the man who led the Southern African country for 37 years.
Mugabe stepped down Tuesday shortly after the parliament started his impeachment proceedings in the afternoon.
The resignation gave place to celebrations in streets of the capital Harare following a botched resignation late last week.
Mugabe’s 37-year rule got a blow last week after the army intervened, putting him under house arrest, arresting some senior cabinet members.
The military said it was stepping in to end purge against members of the ruling Zanu-PF with military background, Mnangagwa in particular.
The former Vice-President is expected to touch down at noon. He is also expected to take the chairmanship of the party and be sworn in as President of the country.
Beijing, Mugabe’s ally, on Wednesday said it respects the former president’s resignation
