The Secretary General of the U.N, Ban Ki-moon, on Monday urged the population, political and religious leaders in Nigeria to  show “maximum restraint” after the interreligious violence that took place this weekend in Jos, the central region of the country.
“The political and religious leaders must work together to find solutions to the deepening causes of the clashes and achieve a lasting solution to the crisis” he said during a briefing at the headquarters of United Nations in New York.

Interreligious violence had already taken place recently in this region of the country. Ban Ki-moon expressed his concern over the resumption of violence and deplored the loss of lives.
According to press reports, over 500 people in Christian villages were massacred in the night from Saturday to Sunday in three villages near the city of Jos, in attacks by Muslim farmers. Some 200 survivors were hospitalized in Jos.
