Niger: It is useless to maintain sanctions
The European Union has frozen all its cooperation with Niamey since the “military coup” last February 18 of the Nigerian junta. But in reality and since last fall, the E.U has embarked on the path of economic sanctions vis-à-vis the former President Tandja.
The E.U has already cut aid budget for 2010 and was frozen as a precaution with the exception of humanitarian assistance to populations.
Brussels is planning to go fast enough to Niamey to meet with the junta, to be informed on the ongoing process and know the true intentions of returning to normal. Then after, the E.U could eventually host the junta to Brussels with a clear roadmap.
Anyway, Dakar has already taken a step forward, and asked leaders of ECOWAS to waive sanctions against Niger.
