Mogadishu : Trapped between Hunger and death toll
Hundreds of Mogadishu residents fled the Somali capital Friday following clashes between the peacekeeping force of African Union (Amisom), supporting the pro-government soldiers and rebels from the Islamist movement Shabaab, who profess allegiance to al-Qaeda and that control over Much of central and southern Somalia. The fighting toll is about 54 dead and 140 wounded in 48 hours in Mogadishu.
The mayor of the Somali capital, Abdirissak Mohamed Nour, assured that government forces had been confined to resist the rebels and called on civilians to flee the affected areas, While the transitional government has repeatedly announced the imminence of a major offensive against insurgents, the Somali army sees itself severely criticized in a report of the Monitoring Group of the UN in Somalia : “Inefficient, disorganized, corrupt and always marked by a culture of militia” … Such is the conclusion of the UN about the Somali security forces. Despite international assistance, particularly in terms of training, the sad fact is: “The government owes its very survival to the peacekeeping force of African Union, the Amisom,” rather than his own troops”
