“We must first assess the terrorist threat that knows dangerous developments, and together, we have to examine the socio-economic development of landlocked and isolated areas of our region»  announced the head of Algerian diplomacy, at the ministerial meeting which opened in Algiers between Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Libya, Chad, Burkina Faso, and Algeria.

The security threats in the Sahel-Sahara is not more important than the initiative of the President of Mali, who was seeking an unified plan of  action to be endorsed by all the presidents, for their  space area becoming more dangerous. But it did not happen because Algeria has believed that it could be a diversion of Mr. Amadou Toumani Touré from his responsibilities as president of a new haven country, harboring Salafi bases on its soil. Indeed, that would never happen if AQMI lacked a “strategic depth”. In other words, the North of Mali wouldn’t become an area of retreat for the Islamists.
The meeting is held in a context of diplomatic tensions with neighboring Algeria and Mauritania, after Mali freed the four AQMI terrorists. This action put Mali in “accused corner-place” and reinforced the doubts about the willingness of Malian authority to fight against terrorism seriously. But Mali will not play the role of “The empty chair” and endorse its role and responsibility in full and complete sovereignty.
