Niger: New wave of arrests

Reportedly, the arrests continued throughout the day and would currently count about two dozen people close to Mamadou Tandja, arrested since Sunday 28 March.
Late afternoon of Tuesday, March 29, it was reported the arrest of former president of the National Assembly, Chairman of the NMSS, Seini Oumarou.

Among other personalities, there were five former ministers, two former spokesman for the government, former Minister of Finance, members of the NMSS, the former head of the High Council of Communication and several CEOs of national companies whose NIGELEC, the Socamin and the National Society of petroleum products.
All these figures are retained in the police academy in Niamey. A witness has stated that they had spent the day together in a large courtyard of the police academy.
No details on the reason for this wave of arrests related to subversive activities. Sunday evening, the Interior Minister said that “any act now, any thoughts disturbing the public peace will be punished”.
