Central Africa: Security and Peace in the COPA menu
Ministers have expressed their concerns about the risks of political and security that may endanger the RCA stability, and recommended (COPAX) the continuation of the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration program (DDR) and the development of a management framework policy of the country including the electoral calendar.
The Council also recommended to reconsider and trim the mission of consolidating peace in Central Africa (MICOPAX), as well as of the Police/gendarmerie, and the establishment of a security apparatus for the politico-military leaders.
Regarding Burundi, the ministers of COPAX decided to send a high-level mission with a mandate to the parties to agree on the issue of peace through organised future elections, scheduled from May 21, and provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations.
Created in 1999, the COPAX is responsible for ensuring the maintenance, consolidation and promotion of peace and security in Central Africa. It is especially the preparatory body of decisions of Heads of State relating to prevention, management and conflict resolution.
