Madagascar: one more foiled attempted coup
Colonel Rene Lilison – Special Operation Forces (FIS) announced that a coup had been foiled in Madagascar on Sunday. Sixteen soldiers and civilians were arrested. Their plan was to attack the Prime Minister’s Office on the night of Sunday to Monday, said Col. Rene Lilison.
The arrested – Ex-military, reservists, civilians – have been shown to journalists before being transferred to the gendarmerie brigade in Betongolo near the Ministry of Defense.
The Chief of Staff of the Malagasy Army (CEMGAM), General Andre Ndriarijaona, declared that the Malagasy armed forces are still united. He argued that the fact that the suspects were recruiting former military and reserve soldiers or peacekeepers could not prove they earned the military office, which remain united.
The Committee Chairman the of the High Authority Transition (HAT), Alain Ramaroson, revealed that the attempted coup was foiled thanks to the intelligence provided by community police, which is composed of civilians. “Without the information they provided, the coup could have been achieved,” said Ramaroson.
According to Colonel Lilison, other people involved in this conspiracy will be arrested.
