Niger/E.U: Brussels might back democracy in Niger
The European Union, Niger’s main budget support contributor has hailed the launch of the transitional process in this country, two months after the military putsch that toppled President Mamadou Tandja, whose plans to remain in power had led the European Union to suspend its assistance to Niamey.
Brussels confirmed its willingness to “encourage the process for the restoration of democracy in Niger, which should comply with the rules of constitutional state and human rights”.
A high-level fact-finding mission of the EU is expected in Niger in the next few weeks to “discuss the county’s political situation and hold talks with Nigerien authorities on the next steps of the ongoing transitional process, as well as the continuation of the current consultations process, in line with the Section 96 of the Cotonou Agreement”.
The EU also commended the setting up of a National Advisory Council, to propose to the government and the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy (CSRD, ruling junta) a calendar for the next phases of the transition and election processes
