Madagascar: What is behind the Army ultimatum?

By on April 21, 2010
The Malagasy Armed Forces have given an ultimatum to the High Transitional Authority to find a solution, by the end of this month, to the political crisis that has been paralysing Madagascar for over a year. The military did not give any other details or said what would happen after the deadline. But some observers fear that the army will take the power if no valid roadmap is adopted.

Already, a meeting between Andry Rajoelina, the “HAT” President, and former President Marc Ravalomanana, is scheduled for April 25 in South Africa. At the end of the meeting, “the resolutions will be presented to the armed forces at the end of April”.
The General Ndriarijaona, Malagasy Army Chief, explained that the military and policemen action was justified by their desire to “not remain indifferent to the suffering of the people”. This is why “we have established a framework for finding a solution to rescue the country from its deep crisis”.
Despite what sounds like an ultimatum, the president of the “HAT” is still confident and faithful. He declared that «…because of the Malagasy Army wisdom, and because the country has not yet reached the stage where there is nothing to do and where the armed forces must take power” he said.
