Chad/U.N: Rebels critic the downsizing agreement
The UN and Chad have finally reached an agreement on Friday that extends the mandate of MINURCAT until October at least. Its workforce will be reduced to 1,900 men and the mission will be redefined. The main rebel factions accuse the government of President Deby of not worrying about the protection of the refugees and to use them for recruitment into militias to destabilize the entire region and especially Darfur.
Abderaman Koulamallah, spokesman for the Union forces of resistance (UFR), said that “the government has lost control of the East and fears that the absence of the international community will provide an opportunity to intensify repression.
