Madagascar: Back to the starting blocks again

By on May 4, 2010
After taking the initiative for a meeting to revive the process, blocked by the impossibility of establishing the bodies of the transitional arrangements provided by the Maputo and Addis Ababa accords, the French attempt just failed and the  mediation of substituting its solution to the African Union one did not work neither.

The mediator, Joaquim Chissano, will then be the master of mediation in the Madagascar crisis, with the confirmation that the only initiative left on the agenda is that of the African Union.
The A.U imposed sanctions on Mr. Rajoelina and his political allies in March for their refusal to honor agreements that had been mandated by its body, and rejecting the legitimacy of the acting government.
“The mediator and President Zuma have asked the leaders of all groups to work under the Maputo agreements and the Additional Act of Addis Ababa” to resolve all outstanding issues” and meet again in two weeks. That is obviously a pure euphemism because Rajoelina, chairman of the transition, has declared, upon his return to Antananarivo, to meet with the army chiefs first and establish a new government which will prepare and conduct the country to the next elections.
The crisis in Madagascar seems to have good days ahead, unless the army puts its foot down there … but the question is whether the military leaders are united to give their voice again to Rajoelina…
