DRC/Rwanda: The rebels continue to kill and rape in North Kivu

By on May 4, 2010
The rebels of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) are “very active and operational in the territory of Lubero, located about 320 km north of Goma, capital of the province of North Kivu. The rebels are leading to surprise attacks, either by daylight or night in the localities. They kill, they rape, burn houses and huts, and plunder.

According to the Lubero’s civil society, the absence of a significant number of Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) in this territory is the cause of this upsurge in attacks by rebels of the FDLR.
The Lubero administrator is calling the provincial authorities of North Kivu and the central government to strengthen their numbers and capacities of the FARDC in this part of the DRC to put an end to rebel attacks. He also called on MONUC to support the FARDC in the neutralisation of the FDLR operations.
