Nigeria: The President is dead

Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua removed from power for months by illness, died Wednesday night at the age of 58 years. Umaru Yar’Adua had not been seen in public since November 2009.

The government has indicated that he had passed away in his presidential residence. Suffering from kidney problems for years, he traveled in late 2009 in Saudi Arabia to treat a “pericarditis” inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart.
The acting president, Goodluck Jonathan, responsible for the interim since February 9, is now legally president until 2011, due date for a new presidential election. Goodluck is due to be sworn in as the new head of state. The government announced seven days of national mourning and said the Umaru would be buried on Thursday.
