Niger: Renewing with the European Union cooperation
By African Bulletin on May 28, 2010
At the conclusion of the consultation meeting on Wednesday in Brussels with the government of Niger, the European Union considered that a “gradual” resumption of its cooperation with Niamey will be examined «according to the progress noticed in the process of the transition policy”.
The E.U particularly appreciated the commitments of the government of Niger to organise a constitutional referendum, then local, legislative and presidential elections before March, 2011. The promise and engagement of Niger new authorities to respect the public liberties, to decriminalise the violations of the press laws and to make a commitment in the good management is another point considered positive by the European party.
To prove its good faith and will, the Prime Minister of Niger announced the formation of the next independent electoral national committee. “The CENI will be installed by next June 8th. Its president and the electoral code will be known by the end of this week “. The Prime Minister declared that a progressive cooperation of the E.U with Niger will start. “It is only a matter of few weeks. The E.U and other institutions have made a commitment to accompany the process of democratisation in Niger “, he concluded.
The U.E has reminded that the humanitarian aid wasn’t interrupted at any time since the country has known a serious situation in food safety.
