Comoros: Sambi leads, Mohéli island explodes
By African Bulletin on May 28, 2010
The Mohéli island is the theatre of confrontations between security forces and young demonstrators. For the second consecutive day, Mohélians have blown up their dissatisfaction in the streets of the city, attacking the gendarmes who do not hesitate to use their teargas and their bats to scatter them.
The tension rose after the announcement on Wednesday by the president of the Union of the Comoros, Ahmed Abdallah Sambi, of the appointment of a new government to manage a “temporary” period. This government formation intervenes further to the failure of the negotiations engaged, the day before, between the presidency and the three islands’ representatives of the Archipelago to fix the date of the presidential elections.
That adds another hard disappointment for the Mohélians who expect to see the new Comoros’ president elected from Moheli by virtue of the “rotating presidency between the islands”. The head of State had assured that he would conform to these measures, but required the holding of the presidential elections at the same time as the governors’ election of the islands, what the Mohélians rejected, also by virtue of the “rotating presidency”. Meanwhile, President Sambi does not intend to leave the so desired seat, and Moheli’s dissatisfaction is still bubbling…
