Burundi: the political climate grows heavy

By on June 3, 2010
Five candidates of the opposition announced their withdrawal of the presidential election of June 28th and threaten to boycott all the electoral process.

Agathon Rwasa, leader of the ex-rebellion of the FNL, the main rival of president Pierre Nkurunziza, Domitien Ndayizeye, former president and leader of the FRODEBU, the main party of the parliamentary opposition, Leoanard Nyangoma, former rebels’ leader, as well as Pascaline Kampayano, dissident of the CNDD-FDD, and former journalist Alexis Sinduhije, leader of the Movement for solidarity and democracy (MSD), all “threw in the towel”. They all blame in the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) for having badly organised the last municipal elections of May 24th and especially for having badly managed the after election.
They had asked the CENI president to reorganise these elections, if not, at least to resign. None of these requests have been done. Even if it happened that the current CENI president reorganises the controversial elections, the five opposition parties persist in their withdrawal, «Except if he resigns this time. But it’s too late to catch back the mistakes. They have said.
As a result, only two parties remain in the race: the presidential party CNDD-FDD accused by these parties to have organised the massive frauds together with the CENI and the current 1st vice-president of the Republic, who is candidate of the main Tutsi party (UPRONA).
