RCA: controversy about Bozizé’s presidency prolongation

By on June 14, 2010
The National Assembly and the Constitutional court gave their approval so that Mr Bozizé stays in the power up to the holding of new elections.

The prolongation of François Bozizé’s term as President is far from making the unanimity within the political class. It has expired on Friday, June 11th at midnight.
The Central African opposition claims to have proposed the same thing, within a political framework agreement, but in vain. “We said and suggested to Mr. Bozizé that the opposition was accepting to renew him, within the framework of a political agreement, to the post of president until the next elections; but Mr. Bozizé refused this proposition”, declared Henry Pouzère, coordinator of the Union ofthe Active Forces. According to Mr. Pouzère, “there is no legal requirement or constitutional clause that allows Mr. Bozizé to be a president of the Republic after June 11th, at midnight”. However, the National Independent Electoral Commission (CNEI) has planned to begin contacts with the political parties of the opposition and the majority on the electoral calendar, said Mr. Pouzère. The coordinator of the Union considers that the electoral roll is far from being finished and other various operations would require at least three to five months to be settled.
