Zimbabwe: the Kimberley process criticised
The document of the NGO Global Witness revealed that hundred of persons were killed on the mining site of Marange (east of Zimbabwe), these last three years. According to the same report, certain persons would have been beaten, violated and forced to work to the advantage of the army and police.
In July, 2009, an evaluation of the certification system , called the Kimberly process (KPCS), had suggested a temporary suspension of Zimbabwe from the diamond world trade.
But the opposition of South Africa , member of the Kimberly process, had allowed Zimbabwe to escape the penalties proposed by the KPCS. Probably that support of Pretoria, in favor of Zimbabwe, could explain the fact that “several ANC members – Ruling Party – are involved in the mining companies in Zimbabwe”.
The mining field of Marange, has been the subject of quarrels. The called Africa Consolidated Resources Company claims a property right there, and it is not excluded that this new report is the result of this quarrel.
