Somalia: Save Mogadishu

An extraordinary summit was convened in response to increased, in recent weeks, of fightings in Mogadishu between the Shehab insurgents, who have pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda, and the government forces backed by the African Union force in Somalia (AMISOM).

The Somalian president called in particular the international community “to keep its promises of financial and military supports, to pursue the training of the governmental forces and to provide more assistant to the Somali refugees. He added that “Somalia is in the hands of Al-Qaïda and extremist groups, and that issue requires an urgent treatment”.
Effectively, shebab controls the center and the South of Somalia and also hold the major part of the capital Mogadishu. They swore the loss of the government of the president Sharif Cheikh Ahmed, the moderate Islamist elected by a Parliament, expanded in January, 2009.
For his part, the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi, pleaded for his part in favour of an intensification of the regional cooperation to resolve the Somalian crisis, without hiding certain pessimism. He voiced that The recent security situation is deteriorating; and that is due to the end of the transition period of the Somalian government at the beginning of year 2011.”In this perspective, the Somalis, the IGAD, the African Union and other stakeholders should play their role in a dynamic way and help to knock down the current tendency which is hardly encouraging “, he added.
