Madagascar: Seeking for a solution to the crisis
Led by Nuno Tomas and a former foreign minister of Mozambique, the SADC delegation would come to the Big Island to discuss the consequences of the mediation in the Malagasy political crisis, which began in December 2008. No information was given as for the visit of these envoys to the Malagasy Island. Even the representatives of the groups are not aware of the subjects to be discussed at the Tuesday meeting in Antananarivo.
The envoys of the SADC were received by Malagasy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Vice Admiral Hippolyte Ramaroson. The ambassadors of South Africa and Mauritius also have attended this meeting. The evolution of the current political situation on the Big Island was at the center of the discussion.
By July 2009, SADC with the African Union began to initiate mediation in order to find a solution to the crisis of Madagascar. They instructed Joaquim Chissano, former Mozambican President, to lead the mediation.
This mediation team, supported by the international Community, is at the origin of the Maputo agreements and the additional act in Addis Ababa, between the four group leaders, Zafy, Ratsiraka, Ravalomanana and Andry Rajoelina, the president of the current High Authority of Transition (HAT). But the latter has decided not to comply with these agreements, while taking decisions, deemed unilateral by the international community.
