Guinea: The second round of the presidential election postponed
The Supreme Court is still examining the appeals, registered from the political parties, on which it must decide. It will then announce the final results and set a date for the second round, which will be preceded by fourteen days of election campaign.
Election observers said they were satisfied with the outcome of the first round, and the U.S. Embassy had stated how “extraordinarily it was processed”.
But several parties whose candidates were eliminated from the race have challenged the election results and therefore seized the Supreme Court for arbitration, within the eight days beginning last Monday. The Supreme Court shall then render its verdict by the 16th of July. Adding the election campaign period of 14 days, the second round cannot therefore take place before July 30.
The second round should oppose the former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo and Alpha Condé, if the Supreme Court confirms the provisional results published on July 3.
A diplomat said that this postponement should not be of alarming the international community. “We are not obsessed with the exact date, but rather by the fact the elections take place as soon as possible and under the best circumstances”, he said.
