Niger: The military junta hardens the tone
Former Head of State, Mamadou Tanja, against whom a complaint has been filed by a group of people from the West African Court of Justice, has required a “mercy” from the military junta, and asked to be kept in his home detention, while dissociating himself from the actions brought by his entourage.
General Salou Djibo confirmed the request for “leniency” of the former president, and said he will not relinquish the former President Mamadou Tanja and other many chiefs of the old regime “involved in alleged embezzlement and whose fate will be sealed by the court and the people of Niger when the time comes. He acknowledged that all prisoners of the former regime are being well treated, a requirement that the authorities intend to comply with until the end of the process of transition. The military junta has promised to hold presidential elections in Niger by January 3, 2011.
