Ivory Coast: Presidential elections could be held in October

By on August 6, 2010
The Ivory Coast should be able to hold a presidential election in October, five years after the original date for the vote, said Wednesday the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

It declared October 2010 as the best and suitable period for the organisation of the presidential elections. However, the IEC wishes to state that certain conditions must be observed by the government and technical operators for an effective enforcement of this period.

The electoral process still has several steps to go including the establishment of a final voter list.  Meanwhile, the operation of special audit just has ended. It was to verify the compliance of vital records presented for enrolment, with data records in the sub-prefectures and municipalities. Technicians have alerted the authorities about the poor condition of the vital file. On the tentative list of 5 million 300 thousand registered, 846,000 persons were affected by this audit.

The presidential election has been postponed several times since 2005 because of disagreements over the electoral roll and the question of disarmament. The processing of claims, about the provisional list, is still in full swing and the IEC has to grant an extension, and has to wish everything will be finished for the month of October.
