Bissau’s government accepted the presence of foreign troops to stabilise the country, customary under political and military violence, announced Soares Sambu, the National Defence Council spokesman,

reporting to the office of the President, Malam Bacaï Sanha. He still had to obtain approval from the military hierarchy, which met in Bissau to discuss and give its opinion. This force will be composed of elements of the Economic Community of African States (ECOWAS), the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and the African Union.

An army official declared that the military has agreed to the principle of a foreign force presence in the country. He added that: “We do not oppose the arrival of an interposition force, as far as its deployment is done transparently. I mean that all the documents have to be submitted to the National Assembly and promulgated by the President of the Republic”. “We would also like to know the mandate and the structure of this force to better appreciate and better position ourselves. The military official also added that “we’re just performers, subject to the political power…”
