Cote d’Ivoire: New controversies

By on August 25, 2010
One more dispute has just started in the Ivory Coast about the electors’ final list. It promises more obstacles. This is due to the crisis of confidence between the presidential camp and the opposition from one side, and between the presidential camp and some representations of the independent electoral commission (IEC) on the other side.

In the latter case, the presidential camp suspects some local IEC’s of obstructing some removal requests from the electoral roll. “The law obliges us to receive anyone who comes to court”, the spokesman for the tribunal, Kouamé George, said. He added that justice is required to search for solutions in those cases.
For Mamadou Cherif, vice president of a regional IEC, there is a procedure to implement before taking the case to the courts. “It must be noted that in this process the court can rule on any claim, but not before it is submitted to the IEC”, he said, citing a circular from the Chief Secretary to the Minister of Justice.
In conclusion, these controversies can only lead to further postponement of the election schedule, and increase the lack of confidence in a context of suspicion between the various actors of the presidential.
