Mozambique: The judicial system evaluated by the United Nations
at the invitation of the government to consider the organisation of the judicial system, the degree of the judges, the prosecutors and the lawyers independence, the effectiveness of the measures to ensure fair trials for citizens, as well as the level of public access to justice.
Based on the information she will collect during her visit, with the testimonials, the interviews and collected analysis and case studies, Gabriela Knaul will dress a list of recommendations to help Mozambique to explore better ways to strengthen the independence of judges, a guarantee of fairness, transparency and efficiency of the judicial system.
During her mission, the Special Reporter will travel to Maputo and Nampula to meet with several senior government officials, judges from different courts, representatives of the Attorney General’s office, lawyers, jurists, academics and representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Gabriela Knaul will present her preliminary findings and recommendations during a press conference to be held September 4 in Maputo. The final report will be presented at the forthcoming Council of Human Rights of the U.N in 2011.
