Rwanda/U.N: Genocide report delayed by UN

By on September 3, 2010
The United Nations human rights office is delaying the report that accuses Rwandan troops of committing war crimes in the Democratic Republic of Congo during the 1990s.

The report’s release is postponed to October 1 to allow “concerned states” time to comment on the findings.

It follows angry protests from Rwanda about details in the leaked draft, threatening to pull its troops out of UN peacekeeping missions, if the U.N. published what it called the “outrageous and damaging report”.

Analysts say the possible withdrawal of these troops would be a massive blow, especially as it comes at a time of increased violence in Darfur.

The U.N. spokesman, Rupert Colville, has said the final report will differ in a number of ways from the draft leaked to media outlets. The question now is: Would this alternative solution be enough with Kigali? And how different could be the October publication compared to the leaked draft? Rwanda could find the revised report as “insane” again.
