South Africa: the trials will not help Madagascar
Marc Ravalomanana, to life imprisonment. The outcome of this case should not be isolated from the political events in Madagascar, Nkoana – Mashabane said. I do not think that judgments in absentia will help to solve problems in Madagascar. This statement is the clearest sign, up to day, showing that South Africa does not recognise the legitimacy of the current Malagasy government led by Rajoelina.
Tom Wheeler, the South African Institute of International Affairs, said he was “not surprised by the remarks of Mr. Nkoana – Mashabane. South Africa and the former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano “have invested much effort to resolve the political situation in this country, but in vain. Mr. Chissano has been appointed by the African Development Community (SADC) to resolve the political impasse between factions supporting, respectively the presidents Rajoelina and Ravalomanana.
Ravalomanana was sentenced to life imprisonment for having, according to the charges, ordered the soldiers to suppress a demonstration in Madagascar in March last year when he was still president.
