Africa / EU: Energy cooperation objectives

energy-africaOfficials of the European Union and Africa have published Tuesday in Vienna a joint statement, vowing to make sustainable and modern energy services available to at least 100 million more Africans by 2020. Africa and the EU will take joint actions to increase energy efficiency and renewable energy use and achieve the following objectives by 2020: to build 10,000 MW of new power plants, produce at least 5,000 MV of electricity from wind, 500 MW from solar energy, the statement said.

This statement was issued on the occasion of the first high-level meeting of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership held in Vienna.

About 250 delegates attended the conference, the commissioners of the African Union and the European Union, the Ministers of Energy and Development from Africa and Europe. They discussed this opportunity for joint efforts to accelerate the construction of energy facilities on the African continent and the development of plans in the sector.

The Vienna meeting marked the official launch of the Africa-EU cooperation on renewable energy, whose aim is to promote renewable energy technologies that will open a new era for industry, trade and cooperation between Africa and Europe. The African representatives emphasized on the importance of increasing investments in clean energy, considering that the Africa-EU cooperation should be placed in win-win partnership, based on equality and justice.
