Guinea: The Second ultimatum of General Konaté
Such situation has irritated again the interim president, General Sekouba Konaté. The general showed his intention to slam the door and lunched a warning towards the two candidates, saying that they are unable to agree, and he might return back to the garrisons and appoint, if necessary by force, a civilian to head the country. This reaction has created anxiety within the Guinean civil society. There’s a mission entrusted to General Konaté in the Ouagadougou agreement, and he was asked to make every effort to assist Guinea in obtaining free and credible elections in six months, the Human Rights Guinean Defence Section (RADDHO), Mamadi Kaba, recalled. According to Mr. Kaba, the Guinean people cannot do much better, people are tired, all people’s expectations are hanging on this election, and life has virtually stopped in Guinea. Appointing a civilian president as head of the country is not what is expected of General Konaté, Kaba said; adding that it is up to the people to choose the successor to the interim president. But the Guinean politicians must overcome their ego and give an opportunity to the shaky electoral process to shift to a successful conclusion, in the interest of the Guinean people.
