DRC/Rwanda: Peace in the Great Lakes
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda are determined to bring peace and thus fostering the conditions for optimal development for the countries and people of the Great Lakes sub-region.
The defense ministers of the DRC, Charles Mwando Nsimba and James Kabarere of Rwanda have announced the information, and both figures welcomed the progress made in the neutralisation and the gradual eradication of negative forces and armed groups still remaining active in the sub-region. They reaffirmed their mutual countries commitment to continue working together to restore total peace in this continent. They also decided to hold a meeting between the Armed Forces Chiefs of Staff of DRC (FARDC) and Rwanda Defence Forces. The agreement reached in Kinshasa meeting, followed by the ones held at Rubavu (Rwanda) in June 20 and June 26 in Goma (DRC), have been planned to create a climate of peace, security, mutual understanding and mutual cooperation between the two nations; noting that the relations between the DRC and Rwanda had suffered long enough from lack of mutual trust. The DRC has been accusing Rwanda of supporting the rebellion in the Eastern part of the country, while Rwanda was accusing the DRC of supporting the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), all rebels who fled Rwanda after carrying the Tutsis genocide in 1994.
