Somalia: The strongest country in terrorism risk

Sixteen countries are rated as “extreme risk” by the global risks advisory firm, Maplecroft, by assessment of frequency and intensity of terrorist incidents in 196 countries, and titled the Terrorism Risk Index (TRI).

Somalia is ranked the country number one with the largest “terrorist threat” to Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan. The new “terrorist risk index, published November 15, is set annually, based on the number and intensity of attacks, as well as the country’s history in this area. With 556 identified acts of terrorism , which caused the deaths of 1437 people, from June 2009 to June 2010, Somalia has jumped, in a year, from the 4TH to the 1ST place in the index; followed by Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Colombia, Thailand, Philippines and Yemen, which has seen a sharp increase in terrorist attacks. With 109 attacks in one year, Yemen has moved from the 22ND to the 9th position out of 196 countries. In Europe, it is in Greece that the risk is greatest. Classified as high risk, Greece is now over Spain with 180 attacks in one year. Last of the top ten “extreme risk” countries is Russia. France does not move and come in the 44TH position because of non-fatal attacks in Corsica.
