S. African police discover explosives in bus from Zimbabwe
South African police on Tuesday discovered explosives inside an overhead luggage compartment on a bus travelling from Zimbabwe, authorities said.
This was the second time that explosives were discovered at the South African-Zimbabwean border in one month.
The stockpile of 13 blasting cartridges and 13 connectors cap fuses were uncovered during a routine search at Beit Bridge border post Tuesday morning, police Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
No one has taken responsibility for the explosives, however, as routine all the passengers are currently being questioned while their luggage going through a proper going-over, Mulaudzi said.
At this stage, not formal arrests have been carried out, but police are questioning several possible suspects, including a woman who was found in possession of a mining certificate, according to Mulaudzi.
The explosives were similar to those that were found last month. A passenger, 23-year-old Elita Sibanda, was arrested for possessing 26 plastic cartridges and 100 detonators while travelling in a bus from Zimbabwe to South Africa.
She has been charged for unauthorized importation, supply or possession of an explosive or incendiary device.
