50 victims after attacks against UN facility in S.Sudan
Armed attackers have stormed a United Nations base in South Sudan and killed nearly 50 civilians sheltering inside.
The mob on Thursday made its way into the compound in Bor in the state of Jonglei. UN peacekeepers from India and South Korea run the base.
Reuters has reported the attackers entered the base pretending to be demonstrators. They killed at least 48 people and injured 60.
India’s Foreign Ministry says 2 members of the Indian peacekeeping force suffered minor injuries.
Ethnic tensions between supporters of former vice-president Riek Machar and government forces last December erupted in fighting.
The sides signed an armistice agreement in January. But fighting has continued sporadically. Many residents have taken shelter in UN bases.
